Gal Gadot Shares Promising Wonder Woman 3 Update
The future of the DC Extended Universe as a cohesive world remains uncertain after the Warner Bros. and Discovery merger, but the security of its individual franchises is still intact. Proven blockbusters like Aquaman, Shazam!, and Wonder Woman all have the bright green light for their sequels, with that last one already on its way toward a completed trilogy. Despite the mixed response to 2020's Wonder Woman 1984, director Patty Jenkins and leading woman Gal Gadot are all in on the currently untitled Wonder Woman 3.
Details surrounding the story are close to the vest, but Gadot emphasized she envisions “the present” as an appropriate time period for the next Diana Prince story. That modern-day setting would mean a brand new supporting cast for the Amazon, as Chris Pine noted he believes his Steve Trevor “is dead” for good.
That said, Gadot won't solely be with strangers come Wonder Woman 3. Former Wonder Woman actress Lynda Carter, who made a surprise cameo in Wonder Woman 1984's post-credits scene as Asteria, is back with an "even better" role in the threequel.
Even though production on Wonder Woman 3 likely won't commence until next summer, the film is already taking shape.
Wonder Woman 3 Moves Forward
The Daughter of Zeus is gearing up for her threequel.
Speaking to Forbes, Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot noted she was currently hanging out with her "best friend from LA," that being Wonder Woman director and writer Patty Jenkins. The director remarked that the two "can't wait" to get the next installment of the franchise out in theaters before Gadot mentioned the script for Wonder Woman 3 is actively being developed:
“We’re talking! We’re actually in the mix of working on the script and getting the third one made, so it’s all wheels are working and turning and I’m super, super excited for the fans to come and watch Wonder Woman 3 once it’s made.”
Where Does Diana Prince Go Next?
If Gal Gadot gets her wishes for a "present" setting, the script for Wonder Woman 3 might have significantly more variables.
The current timeline of the DCEU is fairly abstract, but it still has rules in place. The Suicide Squad served as a soft reboot for Task Force X, but it still lined up canonically with the events of 2016's Suicide Squad. Since the previous two Wonder Woman films took place in untapped time periods, Jenkins and Gadot essentially had free reign to tell the story they wanted.
Bringing Diana Prince to the modern world comes with regulations. How does she operate following the events of Batman v Superman and Justice League? Is she aware of what went down in Shazam! and Aquaman? Will she make reference to her pseudo cameo in Peacemaker?
These new constants will make for a different kind of Wonder Woman film, but given the director and leading star's patience regarding production, the franchise appears to be in good hands.
Wonder Woman 3 is currently in development and is aiming for a summer 2023 production start.
